Getting around Hopkins Belize
Hopkins is a small, flat village stretching along the coast. Most of what you need — restaurants, the beach, small shops, and tour operators — is within walking distance once you are in the village. But there are a few local transportation options worth knowing about, especially if you want to explore beyond the main road or avoid walking in the midday heat.
Walking
Walking is the simplest way to get around Hopkins. The village is roughly 3 miles long, with the main road running parallel to the beach. Most hotels, restaurants, and shops are on or near this road. Walking from one end of the village to the other takes about 30 to 40 minutes at a relaxed pace.
The beach path is an alternative to the road — sandy, shaded in places, and more pleasant than walking alongside traffic. Bring a flashlight if you are walking at night, as there are no streetlights.
Golf cart rental
Golf carts are the most popular way to get around Hopkins for visitors who do not want to walk everywhere. Several places in the village rent them by the hour, half-day, or full day.
- Typical cost: US$40 to $60 per day, or US$10 to $15 per hour
- Where to rent: Ask your hotel front desk, or look for signs along the main road. Most hotels can arrange a rental for you.
- What to know: Golf carts are street-legal in Hopkins. They are fine for the village and the short stretch of highway to the Hopkins turnoff, but do not take them on the Southern Highway — they are too slow and not safe in traffic.
Bicycle rental
Some hotels and guesthouses offer bicycle rentals, usually for US$10 to $15 per day. Bicycles work well in Hopkins — the terrain is flat and the distances are manageable. They are less useful if you want to leave the village, since the highway has no shoulder and traffic moves fast.
Taxis
Hopkins has a few local taxis, though they are not as visible as in bigger towns. Your hotel can call one for you. They are useful for getting to and from Dangriga, the bus station, or the airport shuttle pickup point.
- Within Hopkins: US$2 to $5 depending on distance
- Hopkins to Dangriga: US$25 to $35
- Hopkins to Placencia: US$60 to $80

Local tips
- Shoes vs. flip-flops: The main road has a dirt shoulder in places. Closed shoes are better than flip-flops if you are walking any distance on the road.
- Heat matters: The midday sun is intense. If you are walking more than a few blocks, do it early morning or late afternoon. Carry water.
- Rainy season: Some side roads flood after heavy rain. Golf carts and bikes handle shallow flooding fine; walking through it is not recommended due to debris and insects.
- Ask your hotel: Most hotels in Hopkins are happy to arrange transportation, whether it is a golf cart, taxi, or shuttle. This is often easier than finding things yourself.
