Part of IDB Lab’s Beyond Tourism Innovation Challenge, eight winning proposals from across the Caribbean region will receive grants to implement their innovative models.
Government Services
Belize is well known for its lush jungles, stunning beaches, small islands, varied wildlife, and ancient Maya ruins. Additionally, Belize boasts an impressive selection of offshore outsourcing services that attract US companies looking to expand operations in this region. Customer service centers, software management services, and information technology outsourcing (ITO) services are some of Belize’s primary industries driven by highly qualified workers and attractive government incentives.
The Central Information Technology Office hosted a workshop with senior public and private sector officials from both sectors to discuss strategies to enhance e-government services and gather requirements for creating an e-government roadmap.
One of the primary topics addressed at this workshop was how to integrate various government departments to provide more efficient and effective services. This topic is crucial as government must have an integrated and cohesive approach when providing services to its citizens; this will allow citizens to easily access what services they require.
At the workshop, one major topic discussed was using technology to address security concerns within the government, including using software systems that enable employees to access confidential documents from any location. Furthermore, officials at the workshop were instructed to use these new technologies effectively.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow recently approved the creation of “Towards a Digital Belize”. This plan seeks to streamline processes and foster economic recovery through digitization. Premier Barrow was joined at its unveiling by Minister of Youth, Sports, and E-Governance Hon. Kevin Bernard; CEO from Ministry of Youth Sports E-Governance Henry Charles Usher; as well as Belize’s IDB Country Representative Ramiro Lopez Gio.
